Jeff Green's Early Life and College Career

Birth and High School

Jeff Green, an American professional basketball player, was born in Cheverly, Maryland. He attended Northwestern High School in Hyattsville, where he led the team to the 2004 Maryland State Championship.

Georgetown Hoyas

In 2004, Green joined Georgetown University to play for the Georgetown Hoyas under coach Craig Esherick. However, before his arrival, Esherick was fired and replaced by John Thompson III. Under Thompson, Green was appointed team captain and described as the smartest player the coach had ever coached by Sports Illustrated. He played the power forward position alongside center Roy Hibbert.

In his first season, the team finished 19-13 and missed the NCAA Tournament. They also failed to reach the tournament in the 2005-06 season, finishing 21-9. During the 2006-07 season, Green made game-winning shots in several key games, including against Vanderbilt University with less than a second remaining. The Hoyas advanced to the Final Four, where they lost to Ohio State 60-67.

Green received numerous accolades during his college career. He was named the 2005 Big East Conference Rookie of the Year (shared with Rudy Gay), the 2007 Big East Conference Player of the Year, and the Big East Tournament Most Outstanding Player. On March 9, 2007, he set a career high in scoring with 30 points against Notre Dame.

NBA Draft and Early Career

2007 NBA Draft

Green was highly touted entering the 2007 NBA Draft, considered one of the few players who could contribute immediately. He was versatile and could play both power forward and small forward. He was projected to go between 5th and 12th overall and was ultimately selected 5th overall by the Boston Celtics. The Celtics, who did not need another young player, traded Green and other players to the Seattle SuperSonics for All-Star shooting guard Ray Allen.

Seattle SuperSonics / Oklahoma City Thunder

Green joined the SuperSonics, who were beginning a rebuild around rookie Kevin Durant. Seattle struggled, losing their first eight games. Green came off the bench early in the season as a backup to Chris Wilcox at power forward. His best performance came against the Denver Nuggets, where he scored 35 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. He was named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team at the end of the season.

Before the following season, the team moved to Oklahoma City and became the Thunder. Green became a more versatile player, contributing in many areas. On January 21, 2009, he hit the game-winning shot against the Golden State Warriors. Although the Thunder missed the playoffs, they showed signs of improvement.

In the 2009-10 season, Green was one of three young players that coach Scott Brooks built around (along with Durant and Russell Westbrook). He had a consistent season despite a slight dip in production at the beginning of 2010. The Thunder reached the playoffs, surprising many who predicted them to finish 10th-12th in their conference. They lost in the first round to the Los Angeles Lakers, 4-2. Green's best game was in Game 6, where he scored 16 points.

Boston Celtics

Green missed several games at the start of the 2010-11 season due to a sprained ankle. On December 10, he was traded to the Boston Celtics, but his season ended prematurely a week later when he was diagnosed with an aortic aneurysm.

In the summer of 2012, Green re-signed with the Celtics on a four-year, $36 million contract. On March 18, 2013, he set a career high in scoring with 43 points, along with 7 rebounds and 4 blocks against the Miami Heat. Despite his performance, the Celtics lost 105-103.

Later NBA Career

Memphis Grizzlies

On January 12, 2015, Green was traded to the Memphis Grizzlies in a three-team deal involving the Celtics and New Orleans Pelicans. He made his Grizzlies debut two days later, scoring 10 points off the bench against the Brooklyn Nets. On June 18, 2015, Green exercised his player option to remain with the team for the 2015-16 season.

Los Angeles Clippers

On February 18, 2016, the Memphis Grizzlies traded Green to the Los Angeles Clippers for Lance Stephenson and a future first-round pick. He debuted for the Clippers two days later, scoring 5 points in 20 minutes of play.

Orlando Magic

Green currently plays for the Orlando Magic, where he has continued to make significant contributions as a versatile forward.
