He trains at the American Top Team, based in Coconut Creek, Florida. Monson is a two-time ADCC Submission Wrestling World Championship winner and NOGI World Champion. He currently holds heavyweight titles in the International Sport Karate Association and Strength & Honor Championship. As a member of the American Top Team, Monson holds a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu and has a record of 46 wins and 13 losses in mixed martial arts.
Before becoming a professional fighter, Monson earned a master's degree in psychology and worked in the field as a crisis diagnostician as well as a family and child consultant. He is recognized as one of the best ground fighters in the world, forcing opponents to submit with chokes and joint locks in 28 of his victories. He has won competitions such as "NAGA," "Grapplers Quest," and "International Federation of Associated Wrestling Styles."
Monson earned the nickname "The Snowman" after his performance in the 1999 Abu Dhabi Combat Club Submission Wrestling World Championship. Brazilian fighters gave him this nickname when he defeated four Brazilians in the 88-98-kilogram weight category. Throughout the tournament, he continued to defeat opponents and became like a snowball: white, compact, rolling, and growing stronger as the tournament progressed.
In terms of personal beliefs, Jeff Monson identifies himself as an anarchist and anarcho-communist. In an interview, he stated, "I am an anarchist, someone who wants to eliminate the class hierarchy in society and the institutions that create this inequality." He is a member of the Industrial Workers of the World and sponsored by AK Press. Monson also has several anarchist tattoos on his body, including the Russian words for "freedom" and "solidarity" on his right shoulder.
In January 2009, Monson was charged with first-degree malicious mischief for vandalizing the Washington Capitol by spray-painting symbols of anarchy and peace, as well as writing "no poverty" and "no war" on the columns. He pleaded guilty on July 29, 2009, and received 90 days of work and a $21,894 fine.
On November 20, 2011, a fight took place in Moscow between Jeff Monson and Fedor Emelianenko. Fedor won the fight by decision after three rounds. According to the press secretary of the Russian Prime Minister, the crowd reacted negatively to Monson as he exited the arena. However, some media outlets and eyewitnesses claim that the negative reaction and booing were directed at Vladimir Putin, who was in the ring at the time.
On June 21, 2012, another fight took place in St. Petersburg between Jeff Monson and Denis Komkin. Monson won the fight by submission using a "north-south" choke. He also gained attention for entering the fight as a US citizen to the anthem of the Soviet Union.
On November 15, 2012, in St. Petersburg, Jeff Monson fought Alexander Emelianenko and won by submission with a "north-south" choke in the fourth minute of the second round. Immediately after the fight, while still in the ring, Alexander Emelianenko expressed his desire to have another fight with Jeff Monson. Monson responded ambiguously, stating that he respects Russian people.
Always one to surprise, Monson entered the fight to the song "KomBat" by the Russian band Lyube, earning applause from the audience.
