Her parents were Jeanne and Alfred Beals, with her mother being an elementary school teacher and her father owning a grocery store. Jennifer grew up with two brothers, Bobby and Gregory. When she was ten years old, her father passed away, and her mother remarried Edward Cohen.

After graduating from high school, Jennifer attended Yale University, where she studied literature. She received an honorary diploma and a bachelor's degree upon completing her studies.
