Early Life and Career

Hawkins was born and raised in Holmesville, Australia, and currently resides in Sydney. She comes from an Australian family and is one of four children. During her school years, Hawkins was involved in supporting two sports teams, the Newcastle Knights (rugby) and the Hunter Pirates (basketball). She also worked as a choreographer for a dance group that performed ballet and hip-hop all over Australia. Additionally, she pursued a career in modeling, which ultimately led her to the Miss Australia and Miss Universe titles.

After being chosen to represent Australia in the Miss Universe competition, Hawkins followed the advice of the previous titleholder and learned basic Spanish before traveling to Ecuador for the contest. Initially, she ranked 6th on the list of potential winners, but she made it to the final, becoming the first Australian representative to achieve such a result since 1993. During the pageant, Hawkins impressed the judges with her unique copper-red dress worth $25,000 and her ability to carry herself with grace. She made it into the top ten after the evening gown segment and the top five after the swimsuit segment. Ultimately, Hawkins won the Miss Universe title, bringing Australia its first victory since 1972. She also became the first blonde winner since 1989.

Post-Miss Universe Career

Following her crowning as Miss Universe, Hawkins embarked on a year filled with appearances and travels. She visited various countries, including Thailand, where the 2005 Miss Universe pageant was supposed to be held, and her home country of Australia. She resided in New York City in apartments provided by the Miss Universe organization. During this year, she announced her intention to continue her modeling career and venture into television.

Television and Other Endeavors

In 2004, Hawkins signed a contract with the Australian television channel, Seven Network, and began making occasional appearances on the travel show, The Great Outdoors. After a year filled with various commitments, she became a regular host on the show and was nominated for the Logie award for "Most Popular New Female Talent" in 2006. However, the future of the show is uncertain as it is expensive to produce.

Hawkins also participated in the television show Dancing with the Stars in 2006 and was eliminated in the fifth week. In August 2008, she began hosting and judging the Australian version of Make Me a Supermodel. Additionally, she appeared in music videos, television shows, and soap operas. She was offered a role in the movie The Pink Panther 2 but had to decline due to scheduling conflicts with her Miss Universe duties.

Advertising and Personal Life

Hawkins has secured numerous advertising contracts throughout her career. In Australia and New Zealand, she is the face of the hygiene and skincare brand Lux. She also signed a contract with the lingerie brand Lovable Australia, appeared in print and television advertisements for the Australian-Chinese project Grand Waterfront (which aired in Australia and Hong Kong), became an ambassador for the cosmetics brand Covergirl, and participated in a campaign for Asus laptops, with a portion of the proceeds going to a breast cancer charity.

In her personal life, Hawkins was in a relationship with model and former carpenter Jake Wall before winning the Miss Universe title. They continued their relationship after her year in New York City as Miss Universe.
