Ruby Rose: Model, Actress, TV Personality, DJ

Ruby Rose Langenheim, professionally known as Ruby Rose, is an Australian model, actress, television presenter, and DJ. She rose to fame after appearing in the third season of the Netflix series "Orange Is the New Black."

Early Life and Childhood

Ruby Rose was born on March 20, 1986, in Melbourne, Australia, to Katia Langenheim, a young artist, and Peter Langenheim, a racehorse owner. Her mother later left her father and raised her alone, moving frequently between homes. They briefly lived with Ruby's aunt, Mary, before relocating to the Gold Coast and then to Melbourne to live with Ruby's maternal grandmother, Diedre Rose Langenheim.

At school, Ruby was an awkward and introverted "tomboy." Her androgynous behavior and poor fashion sense attracted cruel teasing from her classmates. This torment, coupled with a traumatic experience of sexual assault, led her to develop bipolar disorder and attempt suicide. At the age of 12, she confided in a friend about her sexuality in the hope that it would end the bullying, but it only worsened.

When Ruby was 16, she was hit in the head with a metal chair during a school fight and was hospitalized. It was only after traveling to Germany on a student exchange program that Ruby began to find a sense of self-acceptance. In Germany, she cut her hair short and got her tongue pierced.

Career

Ruby Rose first tasted fame when she competed in a modeling competition for Girlfriend magazine in 2002. She came second, losing to Catherine McNeil. In 2007, Rose's career took off when she began hosting a show on MTV Australia.

The following years were filled with exciting opportunities. She won an ASTRA Award for Most Outstanding Personality on Australian Television, became a judge on "Australia's Next Top Model," and hosted "The 7pm Project." In 2010, she served as a special correspondent in Vancouver for the Winter Olympics.

Rose made her acting debut in the 2008 low-budget film "Suite for Fleur." In 2009, she starred in "Around the Block" alongside Christina Ricci, and in 2015, she landed the role of Stella Carlin in the Netflix series "Orange Is the New Black," which brought her international recognition. The series, based on Piper Kerman's memoir, won three Emmy Awards in 2014.

After "Orange Is the New Black," Rose became the face of Urban Decay and starred in a campaign for the cosmetics company. She also made her mark in music, writing the song "Guilty Pleasure" in 2012 and directing a music video for The Veronicas' song "On Your Side" in 2016.

Personal Life

Ruby Rose is openly lesbian and identifies as gender fluid. She feels both masculine and feminine and expresses this through her appearance, behavior, and clothing choices. At the age of five, Rose expressed a desire to be a boy and even saved money for a sex change operation. However, as an adult, she realized that she did not need to undergo such drastic measures. Modeling gave her the opportunity to constantly change her appearance.

In 2009, Rose was seen kissing Australian model Catherine McNeil, and the pair were later rumored to be engaged. However, the engagement was called off in 2010.

In 2014, Rose met Phoebe Dahl, and they began dating. In December 2015, they announced their separation via social media.

In 2016, Rose dated businesswoman Harley Gusman, but they broke up after two months. Subsequently, Rose was in a relationship with The Veronicas vocalist Jess Origliasso. The couple parted ways in April 2018.

Tattoos and Health

Ruby Rose began getting tattoos as a teenager, as a way to protest the bullying she faced. By 2012, she had approximately 30 tattoos.

Rose suffers from bipolar disorder. She has openly discussed her mental health struggles and promotes awareness about the condition.

She has a large following on social media, with millions of followers on Instagram and Twitter. In 2015, a music video by Russian rapper Oxxxymiron featuring Ruby Rose went viral on YouTube.

In 2017, fans expressed concern that Rose might have anorexia after she appeared noticeably thin at the CMA Awards. Rose responded that she was happy and healthy and that her weight was not an issue.

In early 2018, Rose underwent spinal surgery. The surgery was successful, but Rose discovered that she was allergic to codeine. She also noted that the experience had been a positive one, as it had prompted her to quit smoking.

Recent Work

2017 marked a career breakthrough for Ruby Rose. She starred in the concluding installment of the horror film franchise "Resident Evil," opposite Milla Jovovich; the action thriller "John Wick: Chapter 2," alongside Keanu Reeves; and the action blockbuster "xXx: Return of Xander Cage," with Vin Diesel and Nina Dobrev.

Later that year, Rose appeared in "Pitch Perfect 3" as the lead singer of Evermoist.

In August 2018, the film "The Meg" was released, starring Rose in a featured role alongside Jason Statham, Li Bingbing, and Rainn Wilson. The film follows a deep-sea research station that encounters a massive, prehistoric shark.
