Jennifer McCann: A Force in Northern Irish Politics
Jennifer McCann, a Northern Irish politician, has represented West Belfast in the Northern Ireland Assembly for Sinn Féin since 2007.
Early Life and Activism
Born in Belfast's Twinbrook district, McCann grew up alongside Bobby Sands and Bernadette Sands-McKevitt. Her association with the republican movement began in school, leading her to join the Irish Women's Council and later the Irish Republican Army (Provisional).
Imprisonment and Release
At the age of 20, McCann was arrested for attempting to murder a Royal Ulster Constabulary officer. Sentenced to 20 years in prison, she served 10 before being released.
Political Career
After her release, McCann became active in Sinn Féin's Women's and Prisoners' Departments. She initiated projects such as the Sally Gardens Community Centre, Safe Neighborhoods, the Colin District Festival, and the Falls Drug Task Force.
Personal Life
McCann is married to former IRA hunger striker and prisoner Rab Kerr. They have three children.
