Jens Böhrnsen: A Political Career in Bremen
Jens Böhrnsen is a German politician who served as Mayor of Bremen from 2005 to 2015 and President of the Bundesrat from 2009 to 2010. He is a member of the Social Democratic Party (SPD).
Early Life and Education
Böhrnsen was born in Bremen in 1944. He studied law at the University of Kiel from 1968 to 1973. After graduating, he worked as a lawyer in Bremen.
Political Career
Böhrnsen entered politics in 1995 when he was elected to the Bremen Senate, the city-state's parliament. In 1999, he became leader of the SPD faction in the Senate. In 2005, he was elected Mayor of Bremen after Henning Scherf stepped down.
As Mayor, Böhrnsen led a coalition government with the Greens. He focused on job creation and economic development in Bremen.
Acting President of Germany
In 2010, President Horst Köhler resigned and Böhrnsen became Acting President of Germany for a period of 30 days. During this time, he was responsible for representing Germany at official events and signing legislation.
Later Career
Böhrnsen stepped down as Mayor of Bremen in 2015. He continues to be active in politics, serving as a member of the SPD's national executive committee.
