Early Life and Education
Petr Fiala was born on September 1, 1964, in Brno, Czechoslovakia. He comes from a traditional Moravian bourgeois family. His grandfather, František Fiala, was a lawyer who held prominent legal positions during the First Republic. Petr's father and uncle narrowly escaped Nazi persecution due to their partial Jewish heritage. Fiala's mother, Zdenka, worked as an employee before retiring due to a disability.
Fiala studied history and philology at Masaryk University. He worked as a museum curator and became involved in dissident activities in 1984. In 2002, he became the first professor of political science in the Czech Republic.
Political Career
Member of ParliamentIn October 2013, Fiala was elected to the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic as a member of the Civic Democratic Party (ODS). He has been re-elected three times since then.
ODS Leadership
Fiala became the leader of the ODS in January 2014. He has been re-elected to this position twice, in 2016 and 2018.
Pre-Election Coalitions
In October 2020, Fiala signed a memorandum of cooperation with the chairmen of TOP 09 and KDU-ČSL ahead of the parliamentary elections. The coalition, known as SPOLU (Together), participated in the elections with Fiala as its leader.
Prime Minister
After the SPOLU coalition won the parliamentary elections in October 2021, Petr Fiala was appointed Prime Minister by President Miloš Zeman on November 28. His government was appointed on December 17 and gained the confidence of the parliament on January 13, 2022.
Political Views
Fiala describes himself as a right-wing democratic conservative who rejects both extremism and populism. He advocates for a strong military, increased border security, and conservative social values. Fiala has also condemned political correctness and criticized the recognition of same-sex marriage.
Foreign Policy Views
Fiala has taken a hawkish stance on foreign policy, calling for military intervention in the Middle East. He has also criticized European migration policies and expressed support for Israel.
Personal Life
Petr Fiala has been married to Jana Fialová since 1992. They have three children together.
