Early Life and Athletic ProwessAmerican businessman and sports magnate Jerry Colangelo grew up in Chicago Heights, Illinois, where he excelled as a basketball and baseball star at Bloom Township High School.
Education and Fraternity
After graduating high school, Colangelo attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he was a member of the Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity.
NBA Executive and Team Ownership
Colangelo made significant contributions to the development of basketball as a functional officer and was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame. He was the former owner of the Phoenix Suns of the National Basketball Association (NBA), the Phoenix Mercury of the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA), the Arizona Sandsharks of the Continental Indoor Football League, the Arizona Rattlers of the Indoor Football League, and the Arizona Diamondbacks of Major League Baseball (MLB).
NHL Expansion and Relocation
Colangelo played a pivotal role in the relocation of the Winnipeg Jets of the National Hockey League (NHL) to Phoenix, where they became the Phoenix Coyotes. The Coyotes eventually filed for bankruptcy in 2009.
USA Basketball and National Italian American Foundation
Currently, Colangelo serves as the chairman of USA Basketball and the CEO of the USA men's basketball team at the Olympics. He is also the chairman of the nonprofit organization National Italian American Foundation.
