Early Life and Club Career

Manuel Akanji, a Swiss professional footballer of Nigerian descent, was born on July 19, 1995. Akanji's footballing journey began with FC Winterthur, where he played from 2007 to 2015. On April 15, 2015, he joined FC Basel. On September 20, 2015, Akanji made his Basel debut in the Swiss Cup against Young Fellows Juventus. Six days later, he made his Swiss Super League debut against FC Lugano.

Bundesliga Stint with Borussia Dortmund

Akanji's impressive performances at Basel led to his move to Borussia Dortmund on January 15, 2018. He signed a contract with the German club until 2022.

International Career

Akanji has represented Switzerland at various youth levels. In 2015, he became a member of the Swiss under-21 team. On June 9, 2017, he earned his first call-up to the Swiss senior team for a 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier against the Faroe Islands.
