Early Life and Career
Jerzy Połomski was born to a modest family in 1933. Despite his desire to learn piano, financial constraints prevented him. He pursued a technical education and briefly worked as an accountant before discovering his true calling.
In 1956, Połomski enrolled in the newly established Estrada Department of the State Higher School of Theatre in Warsaw. Guided by the renowned teacher Ludwik Sempoliński, he adopted the stage name "Połomski" (meaning "half-broken") instead of his birth name, "Pajak." He made his professional debut in 1957 with the satirical theater "Syrena."
Musical Style and Repertoire
Połomski's musical style is characterized by its lyricism, emotional depth, and soulful delivery. His repertoire includes a wide range of genres, from haunting ballads to upbeat dance tunes. Among his most iconic hits from the 1960s and 1970s are "Cała sala śpiewa," "Woziwoda," and "Bo z dziewczynami."
International Acclaim and Recognition
Połomski's popularity extended far beyond Poland. He toured extensively, performing to audiences in Cuba, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom, and numerous other countries. His international accolades include second prize at the 1961 International Song Festival in Sopot and third place at the 1970 Coupe d'europe Musicale in Switzerland.
Later Career and Legacy
After a brief hiatus in the 1980s, Połomski returned to active performance. He collaborated with the band "Big Cyc" in 2006 and released a new version of his hit "Bo z dziewczynami." In 2007, he recorded "Czas nas zmienia," which became a critical and commercial success.
Over the course of his six-decade career, Połomski received numerous awards and accolades. He was honored with a special edition of the TV show "Jaka to melodia?" on the occasion of his 80th birthday. His legacy as one of Poland's most beloved singers endures, thanks to his exceptional vocal talent and the enduring appeal of his music.
