Jess Chanliau: Early Life and Education
American-French actress Jess Chanliau embarked on her acting journey at a young age. Born in the United States, she spent much of her childhood in France, attending the Collège International de Paris and Lycée International de Saint-Germain-en-Laye. She also studied at the Cours Florent drama school.
At age 17, Chanliau made her stage debut. She returned to California for her senior year of high school, attending the Marin School of the Arts in Novato. She then pursued a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Acting from Pacific Conservatory of the Performing Arts in Santa Maria, graduating in 2013.
To further hone her craft, Chanliau enrolled in the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in Glasgow, where she earned a Master of Arts in Acting. During her second year at RCS, she participated in an exchange program, spending a semester at the Conservatoire National Supérieur d'Art Dramatique in Paris.
Theatre and Film Career
Chanliau's career began on the stage. While still a student at the Marin School of the Arts, she performed in "Doorway to the Stage." In 2011, at the Pacific Conservatory of the Performing Arts, she starred in the musical "Fiddler on the Roof," directed by Roger DeLaurier.
Subsequent theatre credits include "August: Osage County" by Tracy Letts, "Romeo and Juliet" by William Shakespeare, and "The Burial at Thebes." In August 2019, Chanliau showcased her versatility, portraying over 20 characters in the play "South Bend" at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. The production toured throughout Scotland.
Chanliau made her screen debut in 2008 with a leading role in Hana Geissenndorfer's short film "Play Time." In 2009, she appeared in "Belly of Unbelief" as Maggie.
After a six-year hiatus for education, Chanliau returned to film, making a splash in the zombie apocalypse horror film "Zero Contact" by Russell Owen. In 2020, she had a guest appearance in the dystopian TV series "Brave New World," based on Aldous Huxley's novel. The series, which won two Royal Television Society awards, starred Harry Lloyd, Joseph Morgan, Alden Ehrenreich, and Jessica Brown Findlay.
Personal Life
Chanliau is a private person and keeps her personal life out of the spotlight. She does not maintain social media accounts.
In 2020, Chanliau participated in an online session hosted by King's College London. As a queer, non-binary person, she spoke out about oppression and the presence of racism and transphobia within the industry.
Chanliau is physically fit and athletic, weighing 58 kg at a height of 165 cm. Her cropped hair and outgoing personality have made her a popular figure.
Present and Future
Chanliau continues to work steadily in 2022. She joined the cast of the political thriller "The Diplomat" for Netflix, alongside "Doctor Who" star Pearl Mackie. The eight-episode series, starring Keri Russell and written by "West Wing" alum Debra Cane, has kept her busy throughout the year.
