Jessica T. Mathews: A Distinguished Expert in International Affairs
Early Life and EducationJessica T. Mathews, born on July 4, 1946, is the prominent daughter of Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Barbara Tuchman and medical researcher Lester Tuchman. Mathews's maternal grandfather was renowned banker Maurice Wertheim.
After graduating with a B.A. from Radcliffe College in 1967, Mathews pursued biochemistry and biophysics at the California Institute of Technology. She earned her Ph.D. in 1973.
Career in Government
Mathews's government service began as Director of the Office of Global Issues at the National Security Council from 1977 to 1979. She returned to the government in 1993 as Deputy Undersecretary of State for Global Affairs.
Journalism and Research
Mathews joined the editorial board of The Washington Post from 1980 to 1982, writing on energy, the environment, and other issues. She later became a weekly columnist for the Washington Post, with her articles appearing in numerous publications worldwide.
From 1982 to 1993, Mathews served as founding vice president and director of research at the World Resources Institute, an environmental and natural resource policy research center.
Council on Foreign Relations
As a senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations from 1993 to 1997, Mathews became Director of CFR's Washington Program. In 1997, her article "Power Shift" was recognized as one of the most influential contributions to the 75-year history of Foreign Affairs magazine.
Carnegie Endowment for International Peace
From 1997 to 2015, Mathews was President of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, a Washington, D.C. think tank. She dedicated herself to advancing foreign policy research and analysis.
Other Affiliations
Mathews is a member of the Steering Committee of the Bilderberg Group. In 2012, she was elected as one of the 13 Members of the President and Fellows of Harvard College, the highest governing body of the university.
Personal Life
Mathews has been married twice. Her first marriage to Colin D. Mathews (1978-1993) produced two sons, Oliver and Jordan. She later married retired Air Force General Charles J. Boyd.
