Jessica Rogers: From Adversity to Athletic Triumph

Early Childhood and Diagnosis

Jessica Rogers was born in Sao Carlos, Brazil, with a rare congenital anomaly known as sacral agenesis, a form of caudal regression syndrome. This condition resulted in bilateral leg amputations and partial paralysis, as her spine ends around T7-10. Additionally, Rogers was born with only one kidney and an underdeveloped lower body.

Adoption and Home Life

At 14 months old, Rogers was adopted by a single parent who lived with extended family members with varying degrees of disabilities. Despite her physical challenges, Rogers grew up in a loving and supportive environment.

Athletic Career

Early Success

Rogers began participating in sports as a child and trained under coach Andy Ciprano. In 2008, she won 100m, 200m, and 400m wheelchair races at the Junior National Disability Championships. The following year, she competed in the Can-Am ParaPan American Games, winning gold in the 100m and 200m breaststroke.

Continued Victories

In 2010, Rogers set two records at the American Paralympic Trials. In 2011, she was named "Youth Athlete of the Year" by the magazine "Sports 'N Spokes."

International Competition

In 2013, Rogers joined the U.S. team for the IWAS Junior World Games. She has also made television appearances in documentaries such as "Rebuilt: The Human Body Shop" and "News Report: Kicking For Kids Who Can't."

Advocacy and Inspiration

iSACRA Foundation

In 2011, Rogers founded the iSACRA Foundation, an organization that provides support, education, and networking opportunities for individuals and families affected by caudal regression syndrome.
