Biography of Jimmy Shea

Jimmy Shea Jr. was a former American skeleton racer who won the gold medal at the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City. He also had the honor of participating in the traditional opening ceremony ritual, where he and his father, Jimmy Shea Sr., took the solemn oath. Additionally, he carried the Olympic flame alongside the 1980 men's hockey team.

Early Life and Family Legacy

James Edmund Shea Jr. was born on June 10, 1968. He represents the third generation in a family that has continuously participated in the Winter Olympic Games. His father competed in Nordic combined and cross-country skiing at the 1964 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck, while his grandfather, Jack Shea, won two gold medals in speed skating at the 1932 Lake Placid Games. Jack, like his son and grandson, took the oath during the Olympic opening ceremony.

Although American media claimed that the Shea family was the first in Winter Olympics history to have three generations competing, they were actually surpassed by the Norwegian Lund family, whose third generation competed in the Games as early as 1960.

Achievements in Skeleton Racing

Jimmy Shea was born and raised in West Hartford, Connecticut, and moved to Lake Placid, New York in his late teens. He became the first American to win the World Cup race and World Championship in skeleton racing. Shea won more World Cup races than any other American, retiring from competitive sports in October 2005. He earned a complete set of medals at the World Championships organized by the International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation, winning gold in 1999, silver in 1997, and bronze in 2000.

His best seasons were in 1998-1999 and 2000-2001 when he finished third overall in the World Cup standings twice. Thanks in large part to Shea's contributions, skeleton racing was officially reinstated in the Winter Olympics program.

Life After Retirement

After retiring, Shea founded the Shea Family Foundation, which raises funds to support children in sports. He is married to emergency medicine physician Dr. Kelly Reed Shea, and they have a daughter named Taylor.
