Introduction

Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka, whose real name is James Reicher, was a professional wrestler born in Fiji. He began his career in amateur bodybuilding competitions in Hawaii in the 1960s. However, he soon decided to pursue a more lucrative profession and entered the world of wrestling.

Early Career

Taking on the name "Jimmy Kealoha," Snuka had his first match against Maxwell "Bunny" Butler in Hawaii in 1969. He then began performing in the NWA Pacific Northwest Championship, where he became a six-time champion. His first title win came on November 16, 1973, when he defeated Ramos Bull in the finals. Following this victory, he changed his ring name to Jimmy Snuka.

Rivalries and Success

During his reign as champion from 1971 to 1976, Snuka's first major rivalry emerged against fellow newcomer Jesse "The Body" Ventura, lasting almost two years. In addition to NWA championships, Snuka also teamed up with Paul Orndorff in the Mid-Atlantic Championship in Texas, where they won the tag team title against Baron Von Raschke and Greg Valentine. Snuka also achieved success in singles competition, defeating Ricky Steamboat.

The Birth of "The Fly"

Snuka earned the moniker "The Fly" after his performances in Georgia, where he introduced a new move by leaping off the ropes onto his opponents. This move gained tremendous popularity among fans and promoters, leading Snuka to further perfect his aerial abilities.

WWF Career and Tragedy

In January 1982, Jimmy Snuka joined the World Wrestling Federation (WWF). He unsuccessfully fought for the championship title against Bob Backlund multiple times, including a famous steel cage match at Madison Square Garden on June 28, 1982, which was later named "Match of the Year" by "Pro Wrestling Illustrated."

In 1983, Snuka engaged in a heated rivalry with Don Muraco after both wrestlers disrespectfully exchanged words at a conference before their Intercontinental Championship match. The altercation escalated when Snuka and Muraco attacked each other with microphones. Additionally, this year was marked by the tragic death of Snuka's girlfriend, Nancy Argentino. She was found unconscious in a hotel room next to a sleeping Snuka and later died in the hospital from head injuries. Her death was ruled accidental.

Later Years and Legacy

After 1983, Snuka did not achieve the same level of success as before. He continued wrestling but did not secure any significant victories. Snuka's legacy extends to his son, who is also a professional wrestler known as Sim Snuka. Outside of wrestling, Snuka appeared in the film "Buffalo Bushido" as himself and in "Shoot Out of Luck" alongside Willie Nelson and Randall "Tex" Cobb in a leading role.
