Jo Johnson: Conservative Politician and Academic
Early Life and EducationJo Johnson was born in Brussels, Belgium, and attended the European School of Brussels, Hall School in London, and Ashdown House School in East Sussex. He later studied modern history at Balliol College, Oxford University, and holds an MBA from INSEAD and a degree from the Université Libre de Bruxelles.
Career in Finance and Journalism
Before entering politics, Johnson worked as an investment banker at Deutsche Bank. In 1997, he joined the Financial Times as a correspondent, eventually becoming assistant editor and writing the influential daily column "Lex" until 2010.
Political Career
In 2010, Johnson was elected as Member of Parliament for Orpington. In 2013, he was appointed head of political strategy in David Cameron's office. He served as Minister of State for Universities and Science in 2015-2018 and 2019.
In the 2017 general election, Johnson was re-elected with an increased majority. In 2018, he resigned from government in protest against Theresa May's Brexit plan.
Return to Government
In 2019, Johnson was appointed Minister of State under his brother, Prime Minister Boris Johnson. He held responsibility for universities and research. He resigned in 2019.
House of Lords and Family Life
In 2020, Johnson was awarded a life peerage and entered the House of Lords. He is married to journalist Amelia Gentleman and has two children.
