Dr. Joachim Hammeling: Noted German Botanist and University Professor
Early Life and EducationJoachim Hammeling was a renowned German botanist and university professor. From 1920 to 1924, he pursued his studies in natural sciences at the University of Berlin. He also spent a brief period at the University of Marburg. During his time in Berlin, he received mentorship from Gottlieb Haberlandt in botany and Max Hartmann in zoology. In 1924, Hammeling earned his doctorate in philosophy.
Academic Career
Research and TeachingFrom 1924 to 1940, Hammeling served as a junior research associate at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Biology in Berlin-Dahlem under the guidance of Max Hartmann. In 1931, he became a Privatdozent (adjunct lecturer). In 1940, Hammeling was appointed director of the German-Italian Institute for Marine Biology in Rovinj. Subsequently, from 1942 to 1945, he held an adjunct professorship in marine biology at the University of Berlin.
Post-War Research
In 1946, Hammeling became head of a department at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Biology in Langenargen on Lake Constance. From 1949 to 1970, he served as director of the Institute for Marine Biology at the Max Planck Society (renamed Institute for Cell Biology in 1968) in Wilhelmshaven. Hammeling's research focused primarily on the giant unicellular alga Acetabularia.
