Joachim Rücker: A Dedicated Diplomat Serving the United Nations
Early Life and EducationJoachim Rücker was born in Schwäbisch Hall, Germany, on May 30, 1951. Following his liberal values, he completed his civilian service in an Israeli Red Cross hospital after graduating from high school.
Rücker pursued higher education at the University of Freiburg, graduating with a degree in economics and later obtaining a doctorate in political science.
Diplomatic Career with the German Foreign Office
In 1979, Rücker joined the Federal Foreign Office of Germany's Economic Department. Throughout his tenure, he held responsibilities in various overseas missions in Vienna, Dar es Salaam, and Detroit.
Political Engagement and Local Administration
As a member of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), Rücker served as Mayor of Sindelfingen, Germany, from August 1993 to 2001.
UN Missions
In 2001, Rücker joined the United Nations as Deputy Special Representative for Administrative and Financial Matters in Bosnia and Herzegovina. After his tenure in Sarajevo, he returned to the German Foreign Office and headed the Finance Department for two years.
Appointment as Head of UNMIK
In 2006, Rücker was appointed Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK), where he served until 2008.
Personal Life
Rücker is happily married to a pediatrician who resides in Stuttgart, Germany. They have three children.
Hobbies and Interests
Outside of his diplomatic duties, Rücker enjoys various hobbies such as skiing, tennis, and running. He is also an avid reader and plays the piano.
