In 1962, he earned a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Pittsburgh Law School, working as a janitor, construction worker, and dormitory proctor during his law school years.

Entry into Politics and Early Senate Career

Hatch's political career began in 1976 when he was elected to the United States Senate, becoming the longest-serving senator in Utah history and surpassing the record held by Reed Smoot. As a member of the Republican party, he chaired the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions from 1981 to 1987.

From 1993 to 2005, Hatch served as the ranking member of the Senate Judiciary Committee. He has also played significant roles in shaping immigration, anti-terrorism, and intelligence policies. Hatch was a co-author of the 1995 Anti-Terrorism Act and supported the expansion of H-1B visas while advocating for stricter immigration enforcement.

In 2000, Hatch unsuccessfully sought the Republican presidential nomination, losing to George W. Bush. He proposed the controversial DREAM Act, which would have provided a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants who entered the U.S. as children.
