Joan Burton: A Political Journey
Joan Burton (née Collins) is an Irish politician who served as Tánaiste (Deputy Prime Minister) of Ireland from 2014 to 2016.
Early Life and Political Debut
Burton was born in Dublin, Ireland, on January 18, 1943. She graduated from Trinity College Dublin with a degree in Social Science in 1966. She began her political career in the 1970s, serving on Dublin City Council from 1974 to 1982.
Ascent to Parliament
Burton was first elected to Dáil Éireann, the lower house of the Irish Parliament, in the 1992 general election, representing the Dublin West constituency. She served as Minister of State for Foreign Affairs from 1995 to 1997, but lost her seat in the 1997 general election. However, she returned to Dáil Éireann in the 2002 election.
Leadership of the Labour Party
From 2007 to 2014, Burton served as Deputy Leader of the Labour Party. In 2014, she became Leader of the Labour Party after Eamon Gilmore resigned.
Tánaiste and Minister for Social Protection
Following the 2014 general election, Burton was appointed Tánaiste and Minister for Social Protection in the Fine Gael and Labour Party coalition government. She held these positions until the 2016 general election, when the Labour Party lost a significant number of seats. Burton remained a member of Dáil Éireann until she retired from politics in 2020.
