Joan Lunden was born on September 19, 1950, in California to a physician father. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Sacramento State University, majoring in speech arts. Additionally, she taught journalism courses at Montclair State College in New Jersey.

Lunden's broadcasting career began in Sacramento, California, where she worked in both television and radio, anchoring a daily noon newscast. In 1975, she joined New York's Eyewitness News, where her career took off. She became a co-host of Good Morning America in 1980, a position she held until 1997.
