Biography of Joan Towerskaya

Joan Towerskaya was the first wife of Scottish King David II. She was born in the Tower Castle as the youngest daughter of English King Edward II and his wife Isabella of France.

Early Life and Education

In 1324, due to a conflict between her parents, Joan and her sister Eleanor were sent to be raised by Hugh Despenser the Younger's wife, Eleanor de Clare. Later, they were entrusted to Ralph de Monthermer and his wife Isabella Hastings. The two girls lived in the castles of Pleshy and Marlborough.

Return to her Mother and Marriage

In 1326, after the overthrow of Edward II, Joan was reunited with her mother. According to the terms of the Treaty of Northampton, Joan was married to David II of Scotland on July 17, 1328. The wedding took place in Berwick. On June 7, 1329, her father-in-law, Robert I, passed away, and the six-year-old David II became king. The couple was crowned in Scone in November 1331.

Exile in France

After the victory of Edward III, who supported Edward Balliol's claim to the Scottish throne, at the Battle of Halidon Hill in July 1333, David and Joan were sent to France for safety reasons. They arrived in Boulogne in May 1334, where they were welcomed by the French King Philip VI. Little is known about the life of the Scottish King and Queen on the continent, except that they resided in the Château Gaillard.
