Biography of Joanna Lumley
Joanna Lumley, an English actress and former model, gained popularity through her appearances in numerous television films that were extremely popular in the UK. She was born on May 1, 1946, in Kashmir, India, to James Rutherford, a British Army officer, and Rose Beatrice Weir. When Joanna was just a year old, her family left India and settled in London, England. She attended St Mary's School and later studied at Lucie Clayton.

Modeling and Early Television Career
Lumley worked in the modeling industry for several years and made her first television appearances in commercials and minor roles in shows like "The Bruce Forsyth Show" (1966). She also continued to work as a model for Jean Muir. Lumley never formally trained in acting as her natural talent was enough to propel her career forward.

Breakthrough Roles
Her first significant role was in the film "Some Girls Do," followed by a memorable but brief appearance in "Coronation Street." In the mid-1970s, Lumley appeared in "The Satanic Rites of Dracula" alongside Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee. Her breakthrough came with the lead role in "The New Avengers," a revival of the popular 1960s show "The Avengers." Her portrayal of Purdey made her immensely popular and gained her a large fan base.
Later Career
In 1979, Lumley starred in the series "Sapphire and Steel" and appeared in several other films. Some notable works include "Lovejoy," "In the Kingdom of the Thunder Dragon" (earning her a BAFTA nomination for Best Actress in 1999), and "A Rather English Marriage." In 2000, she co-produced the miniseries "The Cazalets" and continued to make guest appearances in various programs. Lumley also gained recognition for her distinctive voice, which became highly regarded in the United Kingdom.
