Edson dos Santos (Ed)

Early Life and Club Career

Edson dos Santos, known as Ed, was born in Campinas, Brazil, on April 1, 1955. He began his football career in 1971 with hometown club Guarani. During his seven seasons with Guarani, he played 109 matches in the Brazilian Championship. In 1978, he moved to Corinthians, where he became a key member of the legendary "Black Wall" defense alongside goalkeeper Jairo, right-back Zé Maria, fellow center-back Mauro, and left-back Wladimir. Corinthians won the São Paulo state championship in 1979. In 1981, Ed transferred to Santos, but his stay there was brief. He then sought opportunities in Mexico, playing for América and Universidad de Guadalajara. With América, he won the Mexican championship in 1984. He ended his career back in Brazil with Blumenau in 1987.

International Career

Ed made 56 appearances for the Brazilian national team between 1975 and 1980. He was part of the squad that finished third at the 1978 FIFA World Cup, where he distinguished himself with two dramatic goal-line clearances in quick succession against Spain. Ed also represented Brazil in the 200th anniversary celebration tournament of the United States, which the Brazilian team won. He also won the Atlantic Cup and the Rio-Branco Cup with the national team.

Business and Later Life

After retiring as a player, Ed lived in São Paulo, where he ran a business in the Mooca neighborhood. He died on May 31, 2024, in São Paulo, at the age of 69, after a battle with cancer.
