Early Life and Literary Beginnings
Born in Swansea, Wales, in 1982, Joe Dunthorne was the eldest of five siblings. His childhood was filled with books, and he began writing poetry and short stories. However, as he approached the end of school, he felt stifled by the quiet life in Wales.
Travel and Adventure in Australia
Seeking adventure, Dunthorne embarked on a year of travel after graduating high school. He lived in Australia, working odd jobs and taking advantage of the freedom to explore the world. This transformative experience provided him with the material for his future writing.
Return and Literary Success
Upon his return, Dunthorne realized the common plight of young people leaving home and returning with unrealized dreams. He pursued higher education, earning a bachelor's and master's degree from the University of East Anglia. During his graduate studies, he began working on his first novel, "Submarine."
"Submarine": A Debut Novel and Film
Published in 2008, "Submarine" garnered acclaim from critics and young readers alike. It captured the mundane life of a small Welsh town through the perspective of Oliver Tate, a 15-year-old grappling with adolescence and his parents' marital issues. In 2011, the novel was adapted into a film that premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Poetry and Beyond
Dunthorne's first collection of poetry, "Joe Dunthorne Faber New Poets 5," was released in 2010. A year later, he published his second novel, "Wild Abandon," which explored the relationship of two siblings living in isolation. This novel won the Society of Authors' Encore Award in 2010 and was shortlisted for the Wales Book of the Year Award in 2012.
Present Day
Joe Dunthorne currently resides in London, England, in a repurposed railway carriage. An avid football fan, he plays with local teams and is a member of the England Writers Football Team. His work continues to resonate with readers, capturing the complexities of human relationships and the challenges of modern life.
