Joel Billings: Pioneer of Computer Wargames
Joel Billings, born in 1958, is a renowned American video game producer and designer. He is widely recognized as the founder of Strategic Simulations, a leading developer in the computer wargaming genre.
Early Life and Wargaming Roots
Billings' early fascination with wargames began in 1965 when his father introduced him to Avalon Hill's Tactics II. During his high school years, he founded a wargaming club, providing fellow enthusiasts with a platform to connect and engage in the hobby.
College and the Birth of Strategic Simulations
From 1975 to 1979, Billings pursued a Bachelor's degree in economics at Claremont McKenna College, specializing in mathematical economics. His interest in computer modeling during this period helped him recognize the potential of computers in wargame creation.
Billings initially planned to attend business school after graduating. However, during a summer internship at Amdahl Corporation, he found inspiration from his uncle in Palo Alto. With his support, Billings decided to embark on his own venture in the video game industry.
Founding Strategic Simulations
In 1979, Billings teamed up with programmers John Lyon and Ed Willger after placing ads in hobby shops. Together, they established Strategic Simulations, a company dedicated to developing computer wargames.
Success and Industry Recognition
Lyon's Computer Bismarck marked the company's debut release. In 1982, Billings took on both design and programming roles for Pursuit of the Graf Spee, which became a significant breakthrough for Strategic Simulations.
The Mindscape Acquisition and Return
In 1994, Mindscape acquired Strategic Simulations. Billings stepped down as president but remained with the merged entity in a leadership role. However, he returned to Strategic Simulations as a producer in late 1996, overseeing projects such as Steel Panthers 3 and Ardennes Offensive.
2by3 Games and Personal Life
Billings left Strategic Simulations in January 2000 and co-founded 2by3 Games alongside Gary Grigsby and Keith Brors.
Billings currently resides in the San Francisco Bay Area with his wife. The couple has three children: a son, Alex, and two daughters, Melanie and Jenna.
