Inventor Joel Turns Banana Waste into Fuel

Joel Chainey, a PhD student at Nottingham University's School of Engineering, has found an innovative solution to the fuel shortage crisis in impoverished African communities. His groundbreaking invention transforms banana peels, leaves, and stalks into compressed briquettes that serve as an eco-friendly substitute for firewood.

Addressing the Fuel Crisis

In developing countries, firewood remains the primary source of energy for cooking and heating. However, excessive deforestation and rising fuel costs have exacerbated the fuel shortage. Chainey's research focuses on alleviating this burden by turning banana waste into a sustainable fuel source.

The Banana Briquet Experiment

Chainey's process begins by pulverizing banana peels and leaves into a pulp using a hand-operated mincer. Wood sawdust is added to the sticky pulp for molding purposes, or in countries like Rwanda, dried banana stalks can be used as a local alternative. The fibrous mixture is then compressed into briquettes and baked in an oven at 220°F (105°C). In resource-limited areas where a press is unavailable, briquettes can be molded by hand and sun-dried for two weeks in the warm African climate.

A Sustainable Solution

According to Chainey, the banana briquettes provide a steady source of heat ideal for cooking. Their production process also reduces waste and promotes sustainable development. Currently, African women spend up to five hours per day collecting firewood. By utilizing banana waste, they can free up valuable time for more productive activities, such as generating income.

The Potential of Biofuels

Dr. Mike Clifford, Chainey's supervisor at Nottingham University, highlights the banana briquette project as part of a wider effort to develop novel biofuels. Researchers are exploring the potential of other waste materials, including sugar, brewery waste, and animal fats, to create sustainable energy sources.
