Biography of Joel P. Navarro

Joel P. Navarro is a Filipino conductor and educator, widely regarded as one of the country's most outstanding choral conductors. In addition to his main work, he is also involved in composing his own compositions and arrangements. He is best known as the former conductor of the Ateneo de Manila College Glee Club, under his leadership the group gave their most impressive performances and won a series of prestigious awards.

Early Life and Education

Joel started singing in a local choir when he was still a schoolboy, sparking his interest in choral singing. He continued his education at the University of the Philippines College of Music, studying under Reynaldo Paguio and Francisco Feliciano. In 1985, Navarro received his bachelor's degree, followed by a master's degree in 1993. Later, he earned his Doctor of Musical Arts degree with a specialization in conducting from Michigan State University, where he also had the opportunity to study with the legendary German pedagogue Martin Behrmann.

Interestingly, Navarro's educational background extends beyond music. In 1976, he obtained a bachelor's degree in mathematics from the University of St. La Salle, and from 1977 to 1978, he studied mathematics at the Ateneo de Manila University. It was at Ateneo de Manila where Navarro first showcased his exceptional conducting abilities in practice. Under his leadership, the university choir reached a new level of excellence.

Career

Navarro also dedicated much of his career to teaching, primarily in the Philippines. He served as an assistant professor at the conducting and choral department of the University of the Philippines College of Music. He is regularly invited to seminars and master classes worldwide, known as an expert in Filipino choral music and choral music in general.

Additionally, Navarro achieved success as the conductor of the Calvin College chapel choir. In 2008, under his direction, the choir won two third prizes at the international choral competition in Tours, France.
