In September 2007, Joey Gilbert was suspended from boxing following a match against Charles Howe. The Nevada Athletic Commission accused him of using banned substances. Joey vehemently denied the allegations and insisted that they were unwarranted. His case was referred to the State Commission for further disciplinary hearings.

Return to the Ring

On August 12, 2008, Joey Gilbert reached an agreement with the Nevada Athletic Commission, allowing him to return to the boxing ring. The disciplinary hearings resulted in a one-year suspension from matches and a $10,000 fine, approximately 30% of his fight purse. After additional analysis of Joey's test results using the Gilbert's syndrome system, all allegations of using banned substances were dropped, except for one metabolite from the steroid group.
