Herman Gebauer
Herman Gebauer (1815-1901) was a Danish organist, composer, and music educator.
Early Life and Education
Born in Copenhagen, Gebauer was the son of artist Christian David Gebauer. He studied music under renowned Danish composers Friedrich Kuhlau and C. E. F. Weyse.
Organist and Composer
In 1846, Gebauer became the organist at St. Peter's Church in Copenhagen. In 1859, he was appointed organist at the Copenhagen Cathedral of the Holy Spirit, a position he held until his death. Gebauer composed numerous songs, primarily children's songs, to lyrics by prominent Danish authors such as Hans Christian Andersen and Adam Oehlenschläger.
Music Educator
From 1867 to 1883, Gebauer taught harmony and counterpoint at the Copenhagen Conservatory. In 1876, he was promoted to the rank of professor. Notable students under Gebauer's tutelage included Cornelius Rübner and Peter Rasmussen.
Legacy
Gebauer's pedagogical contributions and his compositions, particularly his children's songs, continue to have a significant influence on Danish music education and culture. His legacy as a master of choral music and a respected educator is firmly cemented in the history of Danish music.
