Early Life and Education
Johan Christian Dahl, a Norwegian painter and printmaker, was born in 1788. In 1808, he studied under J.G. Müller in Bergen. From 1811 to 1818, he enrolled at the Academy of Arts in Copenhagen, where he eventually became a drawing teacher.
Influence of German Romanticism and Caspar David Friedrich
In 1818, Dahl traveled to Dresden, Germany. There, he met Caspar David Friedrich, the renowned artist who influenced his work. Influenced by Friedrich and German Romanticism, Dahl began incorporating dramatic lighting, solitary figures, and sublime landscapes into his paintings.
Travels and Inspiration
During the summer months, Dahl returned to Norway, seeking inspiration in its rugged landscapes. He visited Italy in 1820, where he became fascinated with the scenery surrounding Mount Vesuvius. Dahl's fascination with Dutch landscape painting further enriched his tonal palette.
Academy Appointment and Return to Norway
In 1836, Dahl was appointed professor at the Academy of Arts in Dresden. He continued to travel extensively, particularly to his beloved Norway. His Norwegian landscapes, such as "View of Stalheim" (1826), are considered among his greatest masterpieces.
Artistic Significance
Dahl's landscapes were panoramas that masterfully captured the interplay of light and air. Inspired by Dutch landscape painters like Hobbema and Ruisdael, Dahl depicted Norwegian mountains, rivers, and valleys with exquisite detail.
