Early Life and Education

Johann André, a German musician, composer, and music publisher, was born on March 28, 1741, in Offenbach am Main, Germany. Despite his father's aspirations for him to become a merchant, André had a deep-seated passion for music from a young age and pursued his musical education largely through self-study.

Musical Career

André gained recognition for his compositions and established a music publishing firm in his hometown in 1774, which also included a music printing press. His success in publishing and composing led to his appointment as Kapellmeister of the German Theatre in Berlin in 1777. André held this position until 1784, when he returned to Offenbach to focus on his musical ventures. Before leaving Berlin, he was bestowed with the title of Court Kapellmeister by the Margrave of Brandenburg-Schwedt.

Publishing and Compositions

André's music publishing house, which continues to operate today, flourished under his leadership. He published both his own compositions as well as works by other renowned composers. André's works, characterized by their freshness and naturalness, included instrumental pieces, songs (notably "Bekränzt mit Laub den lieben vollen Becher," which became a popular folk song), and around 30 operas and operettas.

Later Years and Legacy

Johann André passed away in Offenbach on June 18, 1799. His musical legacy has been passed down to his son, Johann Anton André (1775-1842), who continued his father's publishing business and became a renowned German composer in his own right.
