Eduard Wihtol
Eduard Wihtol, a Latvian priest and historian, was born in the village of Lande in Courland, now part of Latvia's Ventspils district.
Early Life and Education
Wihtol studied theology in Dorpat (now Tartu) and Saint Petersburg from 1828 to 1832.
Return to Lande and Priesthood
In 1837, Wihtol returned to his hometown of Lande. He served as a priest for the rest of his life, while simultaneously pursuing his historical and philological interests.
Historical and Philological Work
Wihtol's first significant publication was an article on Latvian folk songs, titled "Über das lettische Volkslied" (1846). In 1853, he collaborated on the publication of the "Livonian Rhymed Chronicle." Additionally, he compiled an overview of Evangelical churches and priests in Courland, titled "Die evangelischen Kirchen und Prediger Kurlands," which was published posthumously in 1890 and 1910.
