Father Borys Gudziak
Early Life and EducationBorn to parents from the Lviv region, Borys Gudziak spent his childhood as a member of the youth organization "Plast." He graduated from Syracuse University, studied at the Pontifical Urbaniana University in Rome, and the Pontifical Oriental Institute. In 1992, he earned a Ph.D. in Slavic and Byzantine Church History from Harvard University.
Return to Ukraine and Contributions to UCU
In 1993, Gudziak returned to Ukraine and founded the Institute of Church History. He played a pivotal role in the restoration of the Lviv Theological Academy and the establishment of the Ukrainian Catholic University (UCU). From 1995 to 2000, he served as Vice-Rector of UCU before becoming Rector in 2000.
Ordination and Academic Achievements
In 1998, Gudziak was ordained as a priest. As a leading scholar in church history at UCU, he organized numerous international conferences, including the "Berestechko Readings" (1994-1996). He has authored over thirty publications, with his most notable work being "Metropolitanate of Kyiv, the Patriarchate of Constantinople, and the Genesis of the Union of Brest." His extensive research also led to the publication of "Crisis and Reform" in English (1998) and Ukrainian (2000).
