Johann Heinrich Callenberg

Johann Heinrich Callenberg was a German theologian and philologist. He studied philology and theology at the University of Halle, where he later became a professor of Eastern languages in 1735 and theology in 1739.

Callenbergisches Institut

Callenberg's name is closely associated with the Callenbergisches Institut, an organization dedicated to converting Jews and Muslims to Christianity. The first missionaries trained by Callenberg began their proselytizing efforts in 1736, not only in Germany but also in neighboring countries. The most famous of these missionaries was Stephan Schultz, who traveled to Asia and Africa and documented his journeys in the book "Leitungen des Höchsten nach seinem Rath" (1772-1775).

Closure of the Institut

The Callenbergisches Institut faced financial challenges and was forced to close in 1791. Despite its closure, the organization's legacy continues to inspire Christian missions today.
