Carl Klein (1842-1907)

Early Life and Education

Carl Klein was born on April 25, 1842, in Lorch, Germany. He initially studied agriculture at the Hohenheim Agricultural Academy before his fascination with mineralogy led him to pursue the subject at the universities of Tübingen and Heidelberg.

Academic Career

In 1868, Klein began his teaching career at Heidelberg University, where he became a professor of mineralogy in 1873. He later held similar positions at the universities of Göttingen (from 1877) and Berlin (from 1887).

Crystallographic Research

Klein is renowned for his groundbreaking contributions to the field of crystal optics. His research focused on understanding the relationship between the crystal structure and its optical properties. He invented numerous instruments for this purpose, including the universal rotary apparatus and the Krystallpolymeter.

Publications and Editorial Work

Klein authored the influential work "Einleitung in die Krystallberechnung" (1876), providing a comprehensive introduction to the field of crystallography. From 1879 to 1884, he served as one of the editors of the prestigious scientific journal "Neues Jahrbuch für Mineralogie, Geologie etc."

Legacy

As a member of the Berlin Academy of Sciences from 1887 onwards, Klein's contributions to mineralogy were recognized at the highest level. His innovations in crystallography and his research on the optical properties of crystals continue to influence the field to this day. Carl Klein passed away in Berlin on August 28, 1907, leaving behind a rich legacy as a pioneering scientist.
