Johann Tobias Bürg
Early Life and CareerBorn in Austria, Johann Tobias Bürg pursued his passion for astronomy under the guidance of Franz Xaver von Zach at the Gotha Observatory. After a brief stint teaching in Klagenfurt, he relocated to Vienna in 1791.
Director of the Vienna Observatory
In 1792, Bürg became the Director of the Vienna Observatory, a position he held concurrently with his professorship in astronomy at the University of Vienna. He held these posts until his retirement in 1813.
Contributions to Astronomy
Bürg's most significant contribution to astronomy was his lunar tables, which provided accurate predictions of the Moon's position. He also discovered Antares B, a companion star to the brilliant Antares, which becomes visible when the primary star is eclipsed by the Moon.
Recognition and Legacy
Bürg gained international recognition for his achievements. He was a member of several prestigious academic societies, including the Imperial Academy of Sciences and Arts in St. Petersburg. His name is immortalized in the Bürg crater on the Moon, a testament to his enduring legacy in astronomy.
