Johann de Kalb: A Distinguished Hero of the American Revolution
Early Life and Military ServiceJohann de Kalb, born into a humble German peasant family, embarked on a distinguished military career when he joined the French army. His valor shone during the Seven Years' War.
Mission to North America
In 1767, de Kalb was dispatched by the French minister Étienne François, duc de Choiseul, to North America. His mission was to assess the sentiments of the colonies towards British rule.
Joining the American Revolution
As the American Revolution erupted in 1777, de Kalb and his fellow Frenchman, the Marquis de Lafayette, set sail for the New World. They arrived in North America eager to support the cause of American independence.
Command and the Battle of Camden
In December 1779, General George Washington entrusted de Kalb with the command of the Maryland and Delaware divisions. His mission was to safeguard Charleston, South Carolina. However, before de Kalb could reach Charleston, it had already fallen to British forces.
Subsequently, de Kalb joined the Southern Army under the command of General Horatio Gates. Despite his objections, Gates ordered an ill-advised attack at the Battle of Camden. During the initial British charge, Gates fled the battlefield.
Final Act of Bravery and Legacy
De Kalb's right flank initially held against the British onslaught. However, when he fell fatally wounded, his troops became disorganized and retreated. De Kalb's heroic sacrifice at the Battle of Camden cemented his legacy as a courageous and unwavering advocate for American liberty.
