Born on November 27, 1940, in Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, John Alderton spent his formative years in Kingston upon Hull, attending Kingston High School.

Television Breakthrough

Alderton made his television debut as Dr. Moone in the popular ITV soap opera "Emergency – Ward 10" (1957-1967). His breakthrough came with his portrayal of the hapless teacher Mr. Hedges in the sitcom "Please Sir!" (1968-1972), which he reprised in the 1971 film adaptation.

Critical Acclaim and Long-Running Series

In 1972, Alderton starred opposite Hannah Gordon in the BBC sitcom "My Wife Next Door" (1972). For his portrayal of George Basset, he received the Jacob's Award in 1975. His subsequent role as chauffeur Thomas Watkins in the highly-rated ITV series "Upstairs, Downstairs" (1971-1975) brought him even greater prominence. Alongside his wife, Pauline Collins, he featured in the spin-off series "Thomas & Sarah" (1979-1981) and the comedy "No, Honestly" (1974-1976).

Film and Theater Debut

Alderton made his film debut in the cult science fiction film "Zardoz" (1974), followed by the veterinary drama "It Shouldn't Happen to a Vet" (1976). His theater debut came in 1961 with the play "Badger's Green" at the York Theatre Royal. His London stage debut occurred in 1965 with "Spring and Port Wine" at the Mermaid Theatre.
