Early Life and Education

John Eric Ensign was born on March 25, 1958, in Roseville, California. His maternal family has Italian and Filipino roots. After his mother, Sharon Lee Cipriani, divorced his biological father (whose identity remains unknown), she moved with John to Nevada. Sharon Lee later married Michael Ensign, who became the chairman of Mandalay Bay. John has since adopted the Ensign surname.

Ensign pursued his education at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (Sigma Chi fraternity), Oregon State University, and Colorado State University, graduating as a veterinarian in 1985.

Business and Political Career

Prior to entering politics, Ensign established a successful veterinary practice in Las Vegas. In 1994, he made his political debut by winning the U.S. House seat representing Nevada's 1st district as a member of the Republican Party.

In 1998, Ensign unsuccessfully ran for the Senate, losing to Democrat Harry Reid by a narrow margin of 427 votes. In 2000, he made a successful second attempt, despite advocating for Bill Clinton's resignation due to his affair with Monica Lewinsky.
