John Gurley
A Biography of John Gurley
John Gurley, an 85-year-old Baptist pastor, celebrated his birthday in an extravagant way - by parachuting. Born in Oklahoma, he has always been an active and courageous person. In his youth, he served in the navy and participated in World War II. For the past thirty years, Gurley has been serving as a pastor at the Brushy Creek Baptist Church in Texas, where his Sunday services attract around 70 families. In addition to his pastoral duties, he worked as a treasurer at the Baptist Church of Round Rock for 19 years. He also volunteered as a deputy sheriff in Williamson County and helped the Round Rock Police Department and St. David's Round Rock Medical Center. For his remarkable work, Gurley was honored with the Frist Humanitarian Award in 2004.
A Life Full of Adventures
Gurley has always been fascinated by the sky and even obtained a pilot license, although he didn't use it frequently. He acquired the license out of envy for his brother Raymond, who flew over Normandy during World War II while Gurley served in the navy. It was his friend Brian Dee, an instructor, who introduced Gurley to skydiving. For his first jump, Gurley chose to commemorate Dee's 1,000th jump. At the age of 82, Gurley made another parachute jump, and for his third jump, on his 85th birthday, he invited his relatives and church members who had known him for 30 years. As he descended from an altitude of approximately 3 kilometers (10,500 feet), accompanied by an instructor, a supportive crowd of spectators greeted Gurley's landing with applause. The optimistic pastor hopes to make another jump on his 90th birthday, believing that a fulfilling and joyful life is possible even at an advanced age.
