Early Life and Career

John MacDonald, the first Prime Minister of Canada, was born on January 11, 1815 in Glasgow. His parents immigrated to Canada in 1820 and settled in Kingston, Ontario. At the age of 15, MacDonald started working in a law office and obtained his law license in Upper Canada in 1836. He then practiced law in Kingston. In 1844, he was elected as a representative for Kingston in the Canadian Legislative Assembly.

Rise in Politics

In 1847, MacDonald joined the cabinet as the Receiver General and quickly became the leader of the Conservative Party. In the coalition cabinet, he held the position of Attorney General. In 1867, MacDonald became the first Prime Minister of the Dominion of Canada and played a crucial role in Canadian politics.

The Formation of Confederation

By the early 1860s, it became clear that a broader union of British colonies in North America was necessary. The limitation of provincial rights and the strengthening of central authority, as outlined in the British North America Act that established Confederation, laid the foundation for the first national government and formed the basis of the Dominion in its early years.

Scandal and Resurgence

MacDonald's government fell in 1873 due to the "Pacific Scandal," which revealed secret contributions from railroad company owners to the Conservative Party's election fund. However, in 1878, MacDonald won the elections again, presenting a platform of protectionist tariffs known as the "National Policy." In 1885, after the execution of Louis Riel, the leader of the Western rebellions in 1870 and 1885, MacDonald struggled to maintain unity within a party consisting of Ontario Orangemen and Quebec Conservatives. Nevertheless, he managed to alleviate the crisis and win the general elections in 1887 and 1891.

Legacy and Death

John MacDonald passed away on June 6, 1891 in Ottawa. His tenure as the first Prime Minister of Canada and his influential role in the formation of Confederation left a lasting impact on Canadian politics and history.
