Biography of John Morris
Early Life and CareerJohn Morris is a Canadian curler and the gold medalist of the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. He was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba and grew up in Ottawa, in the family of Morin and Earl Morris. At the age of five, he began curling at the Ottawa Curling Club. In 1997, Morris finished second at the Canadian Junior Championships and later moved to Southwest Ontario. He studied at Wilfrid Laurier University and played for the Stayner Granite Club in Stayner, Ontario.
Rise to Success
In 1998 and 1999, John won the national championships, setting records for the most victories as skip. During the same period, he also won two World Junior Championships, surpassing Scotland's Harry McKay in 1998 and Switzerland's Christian Holler in 1999. In 2002, he won the Ontario provincial championship, qualifying him for the Brier Championship, where he finished second.
Return to Curling and Olympic Success
In 2004, Morris moved to Calgary and played for the Calgary Winter Club. In 2006, he returned to curling and joined veteran skip Kevin Martin's team. They developed a four-year plan that culminated in winning the gold medal at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. Morris gained national attention during the qualifying matches for the Olympics in 2001 when he tore his shirt and threw it in the trash after losing a tough match to Russ Howard.
Accidents and Continued Success
In 2007, just four days before the Brier Championship, Morris was hit by a car and briefly lost consciousness. Despite the accident, he still participated in the tournament, and Alberta finished fourth. In 2008, Morris and Martin won the rematch in Winnipeg, becoming the champions. Morris was named the Most Valuable Player of the season, with a success rate of ninety percent. The following year, they won the Tim Hortons Roar of the Rings championship, earning them the right to represent Canada at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.
Olympic Gold and Beyond
On February 27, 2010, Morris and Martin's team won the Olympic gold medal, defeating Norway led by Thomas Ulsrud. Morris's sporting activities extend beyond curling. He is a certified personal trainer and also volunteers as a firefighter at the Chestermere Fire Department. He earned a degree in human movements from Wilfrid Laurier University. In 2010, he was named one of Canada's most eligible bachelors by "ET Canada" in honor of Valentine's Day.
