In the late 1960s, John started hosting his own program, 'Night Ride', on BBC radio. He introduced listeners to new genres such as punk, new wave, reggae, and hip-hop before they became mainstream. John had a significant influence on contemporary music and often invited up-and-coming musicians to his show. Artists such as The Cure, Joy Division, The Smiths, The Stone Roses, Radiohead, Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds, Blur, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, and The Clash all made appearances on John Peel's radio show.

In 1974, John married his second wife, Sheila Gilhooly, in a wedding ceremony attended by his friend Rod Stewart. They had four children, all named after the Liverpool F.C football club. Despite his personal life struggles, John continued to make a mark on the music industry through his radio career.

Throughout his career, John Peel stood out among other radio DJs of his time. He was a visionary, pushing the boundaries of music radio and remaining at the forefront for 40 years. In addition to his radio work, John hosted TV shows and became a well-known figure in the media. He received numerous awards and honors, including the Order of the British Empire, the Sony Award, and the DJ of the Year title.

Sadly, John Peel's life was cut short in 2004 when he suffered a heart attack at the age of 65. His passing deeply affected the music industry, and BBC Radio 1 canceled its schedule to pay tribute to him. At his funeral, over a thousand people gathered to bid farewell to the influential radio presenter. John's favorite song, 'Teenage Kicks' by The Undertones, played as his casket was carried, and the lyrics from the song were engraved on his tombstone in accordance with his wishes.
