Born Emmanuel Hirsch Cohen in New York City, John Randolph's roots traced back to Jewish immigrant parents. His stepfather, Joseph Lippman, influenced his early use of the name "Mortimer Lippman." Randolph's foray into politics and theatre coincided in the 1930s.

Broadway Debut and Military Service

In 1938, Randolph made his Broadway debut in "Coriolanus." His theatrical career was interrupted by World War II, where he served in the U.S. Army Air Forces.

Hollywood Blacklist and Blacklisting Recovery

In 1955, Randolph's refusal to cooperate with the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) resulted in his blacklisting by major studios.
