John Roberts: Early Life and Career
John Charles Roberts was born in Melbourne, Australia, on January 23, 1934. After graduating high school, he ventured into the construction industry in Broken Hill, a mining town in New South Wales. From 1959 to 1961, he managed irrigation and pumping stations in Menindee.
Foundation of Multiplex
In 1962, Roberts established Multiplex Constructions Pty Limited. As Executive Chairman from 1962 to 2003 and Chairman until 2005, he led the company's growth from a local contractor to a global construction giant.
Landmark Projects and International Expansion
Multiplex's projects included Stadium Australia in Sydney's Olympic Park and numerous skyscrapers in Perth. The company expanded internationally, undertaking the $1.2 billion redevelopment of Wembley Stadium.
Controversy and Resignation
The Wembley project faced cost overruns and delays, leading to Roberts' resignation as Multiplex Chairman in 2005. His personal fortune was estimated at $740 million in 2006, significantly less than the $1.1 billion valued in 2005.
Personal Life and Interests
Roberts married Angela Egerton-Warburton in 1964, but they divorced in 1999. They had three children: sons Andrew and Tim, and daughter Denby Macgregor. He was an avid horse racing enthusiast and held various positions at The Western Australian Turf Club.
Legacy and Passing
John Roberts passed away at the age of 72 on June 8, 2006, in Perth, after a battle with diabetes. He left behind a legacy of construction innovation and contributions to the Australian economy.
