Education and Early Career
John Sullivan graduated from Brown University in 1981 and earned a Juris Doctor degree from Columbia University in 1985. He served as a judicial clerk for Judge John Minor Wisdom of the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals and Justice David Souter of the Supreme Court of the United States.
Legal and Political Career
In 1991, Sullivan served as a counselor to Assistant Attorney General Michael Luttig at the Department of Justice. He was the deputy chief legal counsel for President George H. W. Bush's election campaign in 1992. In 1993, Sullivan joined the law firm Mayer, Brown, Rowe & Maw in Washington, D.C.
In February 2004, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld appointed Sullivan as the Deputy General Counsel of the U.S. Department of Defense.
Department of Commerce and Iraq
From 2005 to 2008, Sullivan served as the General Counsel for the Department of Commerce. From 2007 to 2009, he was the Deputy Secretary of Commerce. From 2010 to 2016, he chaired the Special Government Committee on U.S.-Iraq Economic Relations.
U.S. Department of State
On May 24, 2017, Sullivan became the Deputy Secretary of State. From April 1 to 26, 2018, he served as the Acting Secretary of State until the confirmation of Mike Pompeo.
Ambassadorial Candidacy
Following the resignation of U.S. Ambassador to Russia Jon Huntsman in August 2019, John Sullivan was mentioned in the press as the most likely candidate to fill the post. On October 11, 2019, President Trump nominated Sullivan as U.S. Ambassador to Russia.
Family and Personal Life
John Sullivan is married and has three children. He is the nephew of William Sullivan, the last U.S. Ambassador to Iran.
