John Hasbrouck Van Vleck: A Brilliant Physicist with Profound Impact
Born in Middletown, Connecticut, John Hasbrouck Van Vleck was the only child of Edward Burr Van Vleck, a mathematics professor, and Hester Lawrence Van Vleck. In 1906, the family moved to Madison, Wisconsin, where Van Vleck attended school and later the University of Wisconsin.
Academic Journey and Pioneering Contributions
Van Vleck earned his Bachelor of Science degree in 1920 and pursued graduate studies at Harvard University under the guidance of Percy Williams Bridgman and Edwin Kemble. He obtained his Master of Arts degree in 1921 and his doctorate a year later. His doctoral dissertation focused on calculating the binding energy of the helium atom based on Kemble and Niels Bohr's model.
Van Vleck's research laid the foundation for understanding electric and magnetic susceptibility. His seminal book, "The Theory of Electric and Magnetic Susceptibilities," published in 1932, introduced a rigorous application of quantum mechanics to a wide range of physical phenomena.
Groundbreaking Research in Magnetism and Paramagnetism
Van Vleck explained paramagnetism in gases and solids, and the term "Van Vleck paramagnetism" refers to temperature-independent magnetism exhibited by some chemical elements. Van Vleck's work helped forge connections between physics and chemistry through the application of quantum mechanics.
He advanced field theory methods for crystals, enabling the calculation of quantum-mechanical energy levels of atoms or ions within crystals. This knowledge became crucial for understanding the electrical, magnetic, and optical properties of materials, leading to applications in the development of lasers and the study of chemical compounds.
Nobel Prize for Fundamental Discoveries in Magnetism
After World War II, Van Vleck's research focused on magnetic resonance, the response of electrons, nuclei, or atoms to electromagnetic radiation. He also studied the binding energy of metals, molecular spectra, and ferrimagnetism. In 1977, he shared the Nobel Prize in Physics with Philip W. Anderson and Nevill Mott for their fundamental theoretical investigations of the electronic structure of magnetic and disordered systems.
Personal Life and Legacy
In 1927, Van Vleck married Abigail June Pearson. He enjoyed football, bridge, and classical music, and had a remarkable memory for train schedules.
Van Vleck died of a heart attack at his home in Cambridge, Massachusetts, on October 27, 1980. In addition to the Nobel Prize, he received numerous awards and honorary doctorates. He was a member of prestigious scientific societies, both national and international.
