For the first six seasons, he was a regular starter, but eventually gave way to a younger Ken Morgans.

Surviving the Munich Tragedy

In 1958, a fateful event forever altered Johnny Berry's life. He was among the survivors of the Munich air disaster, a tragedy that claimed the lives of several United players. Berry sustained severe injuries, including a fractured skull, broken jaw, elbow, leg, and pelvis. The severity of his condition necessitated two months of hospitalization, during which he slipped into a coma.

Loss and Recovery

Upon emerging from the coma, Berry faced a profound loss. As a result of his injuries, he developed a mild form of amnesia and had no recollection of the plane crash. It was only through reading a newspaper that he learned of the devastation a month later. Despite the debilitating injuries, Berry's spirit remained unbroken.

Later Life

After the disaster, Berry ventured into the sports business alongside his brother, Peter, in Farnborough. He passed away in September 1994 at the age of 68 after a brief illness, becoming the first survivor of the Munich air disaster to leave this world.

Legacy

Johnny Berry's legacy extends beyond his football career. His son, Neil, became the headmaster of Brampton Manor School in London. In 2007, he published a book chronicling his father's remarkable journey with Manchester United.
